NPCs from one game will reappear in later ones, and tell you why they moved from where they were before. However, the series as a whole reflects a progression of time, and the developments thereof. ![]() Each game stands alone, and your party of adventurers neither carries over nor reappears in later games. Hopefully I managed to answer all the questions. Torment (highest) difficulty level is a pain though, don't try it before playing on a lower setting. Combat difficulty depends on the difficulty level and from past experience I know that Hard is doable even if you do some "bad choices". ![]() In effect, there are two parts to the game: the story and the dungeon crawling/combat, both of which are pretty much equally important gameplay-wise. The other characters can be interesting and they're written splendidly, in my opinion. The party as a whole has a general background: in this one, they have just been exiled into the underworld, while in Avernum 2 they are a group of soldiers stationed in a backwater fort. Your main characters are not that unique or charismatic, as you just create them in the beginning and they don't have that much background that matters for the gameplay or the story. In addition there are lots of dungeons with monsters to kill and loot to loot but I wouldn't call it grindy in that respect. "destroy the demon threatening the existence of human-kind in Avernum" or "find the cause of and get rid of the terrible slime plague"). All your main quests in Avernum games are pretty epic and in later games also mysterious (e.g. It is strong in story in that it has lots of talking and descriptions (all in text). They play out in chronological order after all. It is not that bad to run straight into the later games as they are reciting the important story parts in the sequels but you might miss a couple of references to earlier games. In my opinion you should start with this one. ![]()
